The Principle of Uncertainty is a curatorial project developed by Francesca Agnesod, Nadia Barrientos, Guillaume Hervier and Andrea Rodriguez Novoa as part of Session 20 of the École du Magasin. Strictly speaking, the word “archive” designates the preservation of a document that has been deemed of essential interest for future generations. Accordingly, the archive anticipates, in time, a legacy whose posterity is at once premeditated and legitimated in advance. The “anticipated archive” deliberately inverts the linearity of time and is created after the fact, as the work’s para-text in that it encompasses all the peripheral discourses and materials, both the influence and the legacy that it inspires. The Principle of Uncertainty is the result of a process which takes place in three both inseparable and distinct spaces: a virtual space, zonedobsolescenceconcertee.org, which testifies to the dialogue with the artists, in parallel with the evolving project statement; the transitional space in which the archival boxes, as vehicles of fragmentary memory, are sent to the artists; and, finally, physical space, as a testimony to the extended instantaneous appearance of the anticipated archives, which calls into question their existence, transmission as well as their possible loss. |
